I've made quite a number of watches myself.  Take a look at this address:

I haven't made any with broken glass to speak of.  One pocket watch was made
with a single crack in it though.
Hands are usually pretty easy to me.  I usually construct them out of
primitives (cylinders, triangles, etc.)
